Why Does It Feel Like Something Is Stuck in My Eye?

That “something is stuck in my eye” feeling can be incredibly distracting. It might feel like grit, sand, or a tiny speck that won’t go away, even after blinking, rinsing, or rubbing your eye.

In many cases, nothing is actually in the eye. Instead, the surface of the eye is irritated or dry, creating a persistent foreign body sensation.

At Vision Siouxland in South Sioux City, we often see patients dealing with this exact symptom, and the cause isn’t always obvious at first. Keep reading to learn what can cause this sensation and when to schedule an eye exam

What is a foreign body sensation?

Eye doctors use the term “foreign body sensation” to describe the feeling that something is in the eye when there isn’t. It can be mild and occasional or constant and uncomfortable.

This sensation usually happens when the surface of the eye or the tear film is disrupted, sending irritation signals that feel like something is present.

What causes a foreign body sensation?

Several different conditions can cause this sensation, and sometimes more than one is involved.

Dry eye disease

Dry eye is one of the most common causes of a gritty or “something stuck in my eye” feeling.

Your tears are responsible for keeping the surface of your eye smooth and comfortable. When tear production is low or tears evaporate too quickly, the surface becomes dry and irritated.

This can lead to symptoms like:

Many patients are surprised to learn that watery eyes are a symptom of dry eye. It’s often the eye’s response to irritation.

Eyelid inflammation (blepharitis)

Inflammation along the eyelid margins can also lead to ongoing irritation (a condition known as blepharitis). This can affect the quality of your tears and leave your eyes feeling scratchy or uncomfortable throughout the day.

Allergies

Seasonal or environmental allergies can cause itching, swelling, and irritation of the eyes. These symptoms can create the sensation that something is constantly in the eye, even when nothing is there.

Contact lens discomfort

Contact lenses can sometimes contribute to this sensation, especially if they are worn for long hours or begin to dry out during the day. Lens deposits or improper fit can also cause irritation.

Something actually in the eye

In some cases, a small particle like dust, an eyelash, or debris may get trapped under the eyelid. Even after it’s gone, the eye can remain irritated for a while.

When to get your eyes checked

It’s a good idea to have your eyes evaluated if you notice:

  • The sensation doesn’t go away
  • Increasing discomfort or pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Redness that lingers
  • Vision changes
  • Discharge or crusting

These symptoms can indicate an underlying issue that may need treatment.

Treatment options for a foreign body sensation

Depending on what’s causing the irritation, treatment may include:

  • Lubricating eye drops
  • Prescription eye drops or medications for dry eye or inflammation
  • Warm compresses and eyelid hygiene
  • Allergy management
  • Contact lens adjustments or updated lens options
